Whilst growing up, my passion for psychedelic electronica was fuelled by the London club scene and outdoor events such as the legendary Glastonbury Festival and the Voov Experience. On starting university seven years ago, I used my first student loan to begin promoting my own trance nights in Oxford.
I spent the following December decorating a desert island in the northern Sahara, the beautiful location of the amazing five day Morocco 2001 Trance Festival. On returning to Oxford, I was invited to join the executive committee of another existing trance night with whom I had previously collaborated.
‘Baraka’ parties had been running for several years in Oxford. Initially my main role was in the formation of a more relaxed environment to complement the already successful dancefloor. Whilst creating the chillout, I realised that my true passion lay in psychedelic ambient music. I took up residency in the new chillout room and for the next two years I played at the monthly nights.
In 2005 our regular venue was renovated resulting in closure of the chillout room. At the same time I moved to London to begin researching for a PhD in Biochemical Neuroscience. Still part of the Baraka executive, I continued to play ‘0-130 BPM Progression Sets’ to start the night every few months, but my passion for psychedelic ambient sets has taken me to pastures new.
I began to be offered gigs playing in chillout rooms at club nights and outdoor parties across the UK for long-established parties organised by Tribe of Frog and Kundalini. Soon, international promoters also began contacting me, resulting in me playing at the Omni festival 2005 in Spain and also being on the line-up for the Soulclipse festival 2006 in Turkey.
Influenced by these diverse experiences my sets are now crafted from a carefully selected range of ambient, downbeat trance, dub and world music perfused with a strong psychedelic element. Recorded samples are used bring a more personal dimension to my DJ sets. My mixes are broadcast on online radio stations Hbr1.com, Digitally Imported (Di.fm), Psychedelik.com and Sofaspace.
The international exposure from these radio stations has created a growing fan base across the world in countries ranging from Brazil to Japan. To celebrate becoming Dr Brij, I am embarking on a DJing tour throughout 2007, traveling to Asia, Europe and the US. Promoters interested in bookings can be contact me through via the DJ Brij myspace page.
